Richard Smart is an Australian viticulturist and leading global consultant, often referred to as “the flying vine-doctor”.
Richard has celebrated in January 2016 some 50 years in viticulture, about half of that time as a researcher and academic, the other half consulting in over 40 countries and many of the world’s wine regions. His speciality is canopy management, and much more recently in the control of grapevine trunk diseases. He graduated from Sydney University with Honours in Agricultural Science in 1966 and, subsequently has earned Msc (Hons), PhD from Cornell and D Sc Agr from Stellenbosch University. He is the Viticulture Editor of four editions of the Oxford Companion to Wine by Jancis Robinson, regarded as the world’s greatest English language wine reference book, along with many other publications.
